Auschwitz Vacation Guide
Auschwitz is the generic name given to the cluster of labour concentration and extermination camps built by the Germans during the Second World War and situated outside the town of Oswiecim in southern Poland, some 60 km from Krakow. The camps already have turned into a site of pilgrimage for all, survivors` families and they who want to journey to don`t forget the Holocaust.
Although not the sole German concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz has become a prevalent symbol of genocide, terror and the Holocaust in the worldwide mind.

The camp was continuously grown over the next 5 years and finally consisted of 3 main parts: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, and Auschwitz III-Monowitz. Auschwitz additionally had above 40 sub-camps in the neighbouring cities and in the surrounding place. Initially, simply Poles and Jews were locked up and were killed in the camp. Afterwards, Communist inmates of world war, gypsies, and prisoners of minorities and other nationalities were also jailed there.
From 1942 onwards, the camp became the site of one of the biggest mass murders in the heritage of mankind, committed against the European Jews as a piece of Hitler`s plan for the complete termination of that individuals (`the Final Solution`). The greater part of the Jewish men, women and children deported from their homes across pre occupied Europe to Auschwitz have been sent promptly to their deaths in the Birkenau gas chambers upon arrival, usually trained in overcrowded cattle wagons. Their bodies were afterwards cremated in manufacturing furnaces in the crematoria.

Prisoners capable of marching were evacuated into the depths of the German Reich. Individuals were freed by Red Army militia on 27 January 1945.
A 2 July 1947 Act of the postwar Polish Parliament established the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on the property of the two extant elements of the camp, Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

The mini return from Auschwitz at 13:16, 15.36, &16.01 as of October 2012. A bigger bus also leaves from Auschwitz at 14:10, 15:05, 16:20, 17:25, 17:50 and 18:20 (again as of October 2012). The bigger bus leaves from the museum region, while the mini bus leaves from across the road from where you are let off. The minibus may be quite packed and wont manage to fit everyone in the busstop. A bus may then be caught to Auschwitz, or you may walk there (approx 1 mile) in about 20-25 min`s (back at the train station go right and later, first street on the left, constantly direct until the indication of the Auschwitz museum on the right). That is a shuttle bus between Auschwitz and Birkenau. It is free and goes every half hour (from Auschwitz to Birkenau it leaves on the hour at half hourly intervals and going the opposite way it`s 15 minutes of the hour at half hourly periods), or you may just walk the two miles between the camps (though it isn`t a very pleasant walk as it`s along the roads).
